Carol: I was profoundly moved by the amount of hunger and homelessness in the Silicon Valley

I am an advocate for CityTeam, a nonprofit supported by Shugar Soapwork’s Clean Hands Save Lives campaign.

I worked in high tech for over 25 years and simultaneously volunteered in CityTeam’s after school programs to help children with math. As a volunteer, I was surprised to discover how much children in the Silicon Valley, one of the wealthiest parts of the country, suffer from hunger and homelessness. I was profoundly moved and decided to leave my job and join CityTeam.

Today, I work to build awareness for CityTeam’s work and to motivate companies and individuals to get involved or donate so we can help even more women and children overcome their hardships.

One of my biggest joys, and at the same time biggest challenges, is encouraging and helping our clients share their own personal testimonials of transformation. These powerful stories make a tremendous difference for them, others in their situations, and of course among potential supporters. I can be very creative in finding ways to bring awareness to the serious issues that we face every day – from death of an overdose, to homelessness, or even a child being hungry.

I pitch in around CityTeam wherever it’s needed. I am eager to help volunteers, talk with children on their level, assist mothers in learning parenting skills, or work in the kitchen where we prepare meals for 600 people each day.  I am a strong woman who wants to make a difference.
