When it comes to facial skin cleansers, pH levels do make a difference. At Shugar Soapworks, we never recommend that our soap – or any bar soap for that matter – be used on your face unless your complexion is very oily. Skin — or at least the outermost layer of it — is slightly acidic and has a pH level of about 5.5 according to the University of California. This acidic layer or mantle helps facial skin retain moisture and protects it from germs. The best way to maintain this protective coating is to use cleansers with a similar pH level, so read the ingredients on the label. Soaps that are too alkaline, can break up the acid and cause dryness.
Having said that, many of our customers tell us that our soaps leave even the skin on their faces feeling and looking radiant.
