At Shugar Soapworks, we are dedicated to honoring strong women (and men) who, despite personal challenges, inspire and help others. We are proud to introduce you to Maria Romero, a 20-year employee of Shugar Soapworks, who packs each box of Shugar and Venezia soaps with care.
Maria, like all strong women, has faced and overcome personal challenges. She came to the United States with her husband 28 years ago. The journey was a struggle, but she persevered and proudly became a United States citizen. She and her husband raised six children, all boys, and help support her parents in Mexico. Today, her extended family, including six grandchildren, all live with her.
Aside from leaving her family to come the United States for better opportunities, she says that losing her brother was one of the hardest times of her life. She says her family helped keep her going and that her husband and sons, especially, have helped her through hard times, along with her strong faith.
When asked what makes her strong, Maria said, “I have a strong will to overcome hard times.”
Maria said she loves working and is proud that she has completely paid off her home through hard work. In addition to spending time with her family, Maria devotes many of her weekends to volunteering through her church with the homeless and with cancer patients. She also takes clothes and food to those who are less fortunate back in Mexico.
Maria’s advice to others who are facing challenges is, “Always stay positive and pray to God.”
